DeClara B: One Hundred Years Young

On August 13, 2006 DeClara turned one hundred years old. Over two hundred people were there to celebrate this milestone with her. Her family spanned the length of the entire room. You might be able to count the number of generations present on that day on one hand, the number of people at the party if you had a couple hundred pennies but you would not be able to measure the amount of love that seemed to surround her on that day.

DeClara's story is one of constantly giving back - to her family and to her community. In addition to raising nine children, DeClara also took care of her parents as they became less able to care for themselves over the years. She always made time to give back to her neighborhood as well. She was active in the school system, as she taught for years, and she volunteered for several different causes.

A devout Christian, DeClara believes that it was God that pulled her through all of trials and tribulations she has been confronted with throughout her life. She longs to be closer to her church and looks forward to being able to attend the services she misses so - now that a brand new wheelchair ramp has been built for her home.

On a crisp February day, Bill, one of our veteran builders, as well as several other volunteers from GE, came out to build DeClara a new ramp. DeClara, Curtie, Janice and Beverly, three of her daughters, were overjoyed. Thanks to them, DeClara will be able to enjoy the world - and her church - once again.
